Cynthia Rylant has written a series of books that touch on several important teaching points but at the same time are gentle and charming.

"Mr. Putter and Tabby Pour the Tea" revolves around the elderly Mr. Putter, who is a little bit set in his ways, reminding me of both my children's Great Grandmothers. He lives alone and is in need of some company; someone who will fit in with his lifestyle. Mr. Putter heads to the pet store, but ends up at the animal shelter in search of the perfect companion with whom he can share tea and English Muffins each morning.

The lessons Ms. Rylant incorporates into her charming stories are ones that most parents strive to teach their children. How it isn't the "prettiest" or "cutest" pet that is the most special, but the one that needs us as much as we need him or her. Also, she helps us to understand how Grandma or Grandpa may like routines, and their life might be a bit calmer, but that's a good thing too!

Mr. Putter and Tabby Pour the Tea is wonderful to read aloud, or for your older children to read to themselves. The illustrations, by Arthur Howard, are charming also. As my son said "He must be very talented!". The rest of the series is delightful too. My children and I love to find out what Mr. Putter and Tabby will be up to next!
