Kitchen Experiments for Kids!
By Brenda HydeKids love working in the kitchen and these simple experiments are fun, educational and they use things you probably already have around the house!Oil and WaterIn a clear glass jar with a lid-I save clear dressing or sauce bottles-fill half way with water and add a tablespoon full of vegetable oil. Put the lid on tightly and shake as hard as you can to combine the two substances. Set the jar down on the counter and observe. The oil won't mix with the water. Why? The oil is hydrophobic which means it's "afraid" of water. The molecules in the oil form a separate layer and will not dissolve in the water.Food Coloring and WaterYou will need a clear glass and food coloring. Fill the glass with water and slowly add a few drops of food coloring. You will observe that they slowly dissolve and mix in with the water. The food coloring "diffused" in the water. The water molecules and the food coloring molecules are both moving all the time, and as you watch them they will bounce around in the glass until they have mixed together and the water turns color. You won't see them "bouncing" but they are!All molecules move all the time, gas moves very fast, water moves but slower, and in solids, such as ice, they are vibrating in place. Our world is a very busy place!
