Children love fairies, gnomes and pixies. I love reading
stories about them because I have always taught my
kids about plants, flowers and bugs-to enjoy them, and
appreciate them. Their imaginations soar after we read
a book like The Goblin Baby. Could those wrinkled new
babies possibly be goblin babies...no...they don't think
so, but...
The illustrations in The Goblin Baby are soft and
beautiful. The words are gentle, and the story is
utterly charming. Amanda has a new brother, which is
taking up much of her mother's time. We learn several
lessons in this wonderful book. We learn patience,
and we learn that all is not what it seems. We must
be gentle to all of the creatures around us. As Amanda
learns to give her little brother a chance, she teaches
her garden friends, the gnomes, to be gentle to toads.
They later find out some startling news about the toads
they had been teasing!
I loved reading this book to my children, who are 2 1/2,
8 and 9 years old. It's the quietest they've been in a
very long time during story time as they shared in the
special world Lauren Mills created in The Goblin Baby.
