University Blues
Out of my three little girls, the two will be off to university next year. I am not sure how to handle this. I am down about it, as I feel my home, will be empty without them. I am scared about them leaving our country going abroad to study. Has anyone on here ever experienced these emotions and how did you deal with it. Also I would appreciate any advice about how you went about chosing a good university in a safe place. I am a single parent and I am so worried about all this. I find myself in absolute desperation. I know I need to let them go, but in my mind they will always be my little girls...They are also very naive, and innocent, and I am concerned how they would handle the big wide world,,out there, all by themselves,,,,At times I feel I should move with them, as there is absolute nothing else for me in this life other than my girls. Please could you give me some advice.

Hi Mariangela,
I know that we can't always be there to help our children and letting go is something that is hard to do. My oldest just graduated from high school and is making his way out in the world. I will help him as much as I can. But he needs to make his own choices and learn by them. Otherwise he will never take charge of his life and rely on me. He hopefully will be going to school. Going abroad is a wonderful experience for your girls as they will learn so much. In this day and age it is scary, but I'am so thankful for the cell phones and FB and twitter internet..etc It makes it so much easier to stay in touch. where are your daughters going? they are your little girls and no one can ever take that away , I still think of my oldest like that too...I know there are others on this site that have already gone through this and sure they have some words? Hope I have given you some words of comfort ...Be brave Mariangela(pretty name) and best wishes.... ![]() |

Mariangela I so know how you are feeling. I was feeling the same way you are last year, my oldest daughter left for college this fall and I still miss her terribly. I am so happy for her and want what is best for her and to be successful. Where do your daughters want to go to college? The college my daughter attends they have a lot of students attending from abroad. We decided on her college after visiting 4. The college she chose is what best suited her, she is not one to attend a large college. The student, professor ratio is about 14-1 she is known by her name and not a number but that is what suits her.

Thank you dear friends, for your kind advice and understanding. They are planning to leave for the states. Which for me is on the other side of the world. But I pray to God for his guidance and help, cause that is the only way I am going to survive this. I brought up my girls on my own, and I have never separated from them. So my anguish is tough.

Mariangela: One thing I would encourage your DD's to research the universities as well as have a good idea of the discipline of studies which they plan to pursue. Sometimes the biggest universities with the prrestigious names aren't always the best ones. It depends upon your DDs' personalities and aptitudes.
With a DS who's the Academic Vice-President of a university in the Maritime Provinces of Canada, It depends upon the discipline of studies and what your DDs want to pursue. Also, please encourage them to apply for any scholarships for which they are eligible to assist the reduction of their costs. University is a huge investment with no guarantees in today's economy. They may have to work part-time while studying to assist their expenses. N.B.: I'm NOT saying this to scare you. I hope that this gives you a small view of what it can be like. Targirl was lucky enough - and wise - to go with her DD to check out several universities with her DD before any final decisions were made. If you have any relatives in the U.S., maybe they could help you out in the same manner. Just a thought ...

Thank you McGill, for your advice, Unfortunately we have no relatives whatsoever, but I will try the scholoarship thing, cause both of them are A grade scholars. One thing I can say is that they both study all the time, they are fully aware how diffucult it has been for me to raise them, and I am sure in that department, they are more mature than most. They will not waste their time in university, they have a goal and are adamant to fullfill it.
God Bless you all and thank you once again |

Mariangela, one other thing: check and see what the tuition costs will be for "Foreign Students". With your DDs wanting to come to the U.S. to study, the costs might be higher! That's an extremely important point. I know that some universities here do that to foreign students and this was part of my question behind having relatives in the U.S., which you already answered.

Yes, I noticed that. The tuition fees are much higher for foreign students. Thank you though.

University blues
I have a bit of news for many of you who have children going to colleges and universities in the USA.
I have home schooled my daughter since preschool. She is now a dual enrolment student at community college in the USA.She started out last year when she was a junior in high school. She is earning college credits along with her high school credits. This is her senior year in high school. She is taking two classes each semester this school year. Last year she was just 16 and being still pretty young in many ways I did not want her on campus. We found several "on line" courses that she needed and she did great. I was not happy with some of the professors so we found a web site that rates professors across the country in all colleges. The site is ratemyprofessor.com and it has been a life saver for us. We find the courses she needs to have then we go to the site and choose a good professor that meets our needs. Hope this helps everyone. Have a great day. ALM |

Alm thats great about your daughter..what you write is true because many homeschoolers and some non are doing their degrees on line. Its cheaper as well. but having college experience overseas can really open your world view as well...so its wonderful for many options..

Mariangela do your daughters know what state or college they want to attend?
At our high school they can take college credits before they go to college and it counts as credits when they do start at college. It saves a lot of money to take college courses in high school.

No we dont know which university they will go to. Yet. We know what they are interested in studying. Which is, medicine, for the one, she wants to branch out to genetic medicine, and the other one wants to study computers...However, they have very very high grades, and have already past two sat exams, for various universities. The marks are not what I am mostly concerned about, It the place they will go to, and where.... Thank you all for your love and support....
