Irish Nursing Home

didn't really know where to put this, so i guess this is as close i can get - this came in my email today, can't vouch for it being real, maybe Granvil would know? maybe not too.. but i thought it was brilliant!

DUBLIN (Reuters) - A nursing home in Ireland has hit on a cheering way
to keep up the spirits of its elderly patients -- by providing its own pub.

St Mary's Hospital in County Monaghan, near the Irish border with
Northern Ireland, believes ready access to a good pint may help its
patients -- average age 85 -- actually live longer.

"We would say the whole social aspect of life does extend the years --
it means the patients aren't bored to death," Rose Mooney, assistant
director of nursing told Reuters.

The pub, which opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m. and charges normal
bar prices, had also led to an increase in the number of visitors, she said.

Having its own bar made the hospital, which has around 140 patients,
unique in Ireland, she added.

And here in the States we think we're doing a grand thing by allowing pets in the nursing homes!

That's something else, hey but if it works more power to them. I know my 90 year old grandmother likes to take a nip every once in a while.

Isn't that the usual reply when an old person is asked how they survived so long..."I have a shot of whiskey every night..." LOL

This is a great idea!!! These folks aren't driving home. Why shouldn't they enjoy a ****tail? But, does the bartender have to check their meds list to see if they can have alcohol with them?

Very interesting idea. LOL, when I first read "does the bartender check their meds..." I thought it said "does the bartender check their ID." And I'm thinking, "dang, carding the elderly? That's wicked." Gee....maybe I'd better have another cup of coffee before I read anymore posts.

I had a client who was 99 yrs old, smoked marlboro cigs and broke the filters off and drank a 8 oz glass of rockin rye each day. she took care of most of her needs but had had knee replacement and required us to do a dressing change . she lived with her baby sister who was 80 and her baby brother who was 93. they all did as she did. best I know , they are all still with us too.

Probably managements will go against it just because of fear of law suits. Someone always has to spoil things that can work for responsible people!

Since this was originally posted almost 4 years ago I wonder if the Irish nursing home mentioned in the original post still has a pub.
