My friend, The Rush'd Lady shared this with me! Brenda
I'm the Hospitality Coordinator for our homeschool group and have made
several aprons to wear during our meetings once a month. After the
tragedy on September 11, I decide to show my patriotic spirit by sewing
up a red, white, & blue apron. Here's how I did it:
Materials:
Sewing Machine
Iron/Ironing Board
Apron Pattern from any pattern company
navy cotton/polyester blend woven material and thread to match, yardage
specified on pattern back. Material must be washed to remove sizing
and
to shrink if needed. Press material with warm iron, selvage edges
together lengthwise on the right side of material. Usually the
"faded"
side is the back side of the material.
Beaded straight pins and sharp fabric scissors
Any other notions specified on pattern.
1 printed cotton fabric flag - approximately 7 or 9 inches in size, also
washed
and pressed flat (if you can't find a small flag, you can paint your
own on
white cotton/polyester blend material with a flag stencil & acrylic
or
fabric paints. Let dry, & iron on the back side to set paint and
remove
wrinkles. Hem "flag" material edges with a tiny rolled hem.)
4 white 1/2" buttons
1 hank red embroidery thread
1 large eyed pointed yarn or embroidery needle
Step 1:
Make the apron per the sewing pattern instructions. Press when completed.
Step 2:
Center the small flag over the chest area of apron. Pin it to the apron
fabric.
Step 3:
Thread the needle with the red embroidery thread. I used all six strands.
Place 1 button in each corner of the flag and "sew" on, catching both
flag fabric and apron fabric. Draw up thread with tail ends long enough
to tie into a bow, each about 5 -6 inches long.
Viola! A patriotic apron. ~ Rush'd Lady
