I'm sorry to hear about your friend's loss. The nurserysite.com lists two rose varieties with the name Ashley, one is Ashley's Surprise, the other Ashley Marie.
Hope this will help you out a bit.

    Smile GOD'S LITTLE ROSEBUDS.

WHEN MY NIECE WAS STILLBORN IN 1959, I WAS ABOUT 11 YEARS OLD AND I DID NOT UNDERSTAND...MY MOTHER SAID THAT GOD NEEDED ANOTHER LITTLE PRECIOUS ROSEBUD FOR HIS ROSE GARDEN AND HE TOOK ELIZABETH FOR THAT PURPOSE. I ACCEPTED THAT AND IT GAVE ME COMFORT.

I THINK PLANTING A ROSE BUSH IN REMEMBRANCE OF A CHILD IS A TOUCHING SENTIMENT.
JUST A NOTE...I AM LEGALLY BLIND AND TYPE IN CAPITAL LETTERS.

Jeanne, you have the same name as my aunt who is a nun and my sister! I am so sorry about your loss. I know what it is like to lose a baby. My little sister died at the age of 2. I don't know of a plant or flower named Ashley but you could always buy a tree. Possibly an Ash tree since that is the meaning of Ashley. You could also think about a perinnial plant such as forget-me-nots or a rose bush as already suggested. There is a miniature rose bush out there that is pink and called "Child's Play". I found it on a garden rose site but can't remember which one. My husband and I planted a tree in our yard in memory of my aunt at her request. She wanted a Crimson Maple. I do know of people who have given a small tree to the bereaved family though.

I'd like to add my condolences for your friend's loss. Losing a child must be the ultimate heartbreak and your friend and family will be in my prayers. The idea of planting something as a memorial is lovely. Rosemary is the plant of remembrance but I think a rose would be much nicer.

Thank you for sharing about the roses that bloom a different color than they are supposed to. The same thing has happened to my one of my DC's parents wisteria plants after their grandaughter passed. They now refer to it as their miracle plant in memory of her. Soil tests have been ran, etc, but no rational explanation has been found for until the granddaughter's passing, the plant bloomed solid purple!
