Does anyone have any ideas on how to ripen tomatoes? We have a lot of green tomatoes and the frost is almost upon us. Most of them are Romas.

I've read quite a few things:
I keep reading the basement is a good place
to ripen. The temp needs to be about 60-70
degrees, and you can lay them individually
in straw or some sort of bedding-I'll bet shredded
paper would work. They don't need light. It's
suppose to take about a month. One tip said
to cover lightly with newspaper.
Also they have to be mature or they won't
ripen. So they usually have at least a tinge
of pink by the stem.
OR you can dig up the whole plant and hang
it in the basement, then check each day and
remove them when they ripen because they'll
fall off. Remove the leaves from the plant
and just hang it-again in the basement or a
garage that doesn't get too cold.
Also, you could make some green tomato
recipes!

Thanks, Brenda! I'll give it a try!
I have a ripening bowl where I put all my green tomatoes. It has a few holes all around & at the bottom. Good idea to have a least one ripe tomato to let the gases start. Find they ripen without getting dried out. Sueanne![]()
Or you can put them in brown paper bags and check them every other day or so...this has worked for me.
