A Memory of Dad

A Memory of Dad

From Linda J. Desiato

At the age of "big people food" when my son was just a little boy, my Dad would axiously await his coming over so he could both play with him, and make him a meal. He would love to cook him breakfast on a morning in which he had slept over the previous night. My late husband and I dated a lot on Saturday night and he would have a sleep-over with his grandparents. What was the most adorable part of this was the fact that Dad would make him a TAB or a BILL for his meal. It would read as such:

Toast 2 hugs

Eggs 3 kisses

Milk 1 kiss and 1 hug

Tip Game of Sorry

Since my Dad was a policeman he missed many of Carl's school plays and such. He would always write him a note. My favorite was "Break a leg" for his first play. My son could not imagine why his favorite grandfather and person in the entire world would wish him to "break his leg." Of course both Dad and my son laughed when told of the misunderstanding. I have kept some of the bills that made it home with my son and a few of the notes. I will give them to my son now that he is a Dad! Now that my Dad is gone, these memories warm my heart very much.

Editor's Note: Thanks Linda for sharing with us! Your Dad sounds very special and his creativeness and love is an example to all Dads and Grandfather's. -Brenda
