A Gift of Breakfast for Mom

By Brenda Hyde

Whether it's Mom's birthday, Mother's Day or just a "thank you", what better gift for her, then a relaxing breakfast to start the day! The key to a fun, easy surprise is to keep it simple and pretty. This is a nice breakfast for Mom or Grandma that isn't complicated, but will bring a happy smile, and maybe even a few tears of joy.

The Food

Sausage: Buy a good brand of heat and serve sausages. They can be warmed in the microwave, or cooked on low heat in a small skillet. (Younger children should opt for the microwave.) Follow the directions on the package.

Waffles: Buy Mom's favorite flavor of waffles. Toast and serve with a generous amount of the following Berry Butter. You can also sprinkle lightly with confectioners sugar.

Berry Butter

Ingredients:

1 stick softened butter, cut into pieces

1/3 cup strawberry preserves

1/4 cup sliced fresh strawberries

Place butter, preserves and strawberries in a medium bowl and mix together by hand with a wooden spoon. Transfer to a small bowl or container.

Strawberries and Cream: Purchase extra strawberries and a small container of whipping cream or half and half. Slice the strawberries into a pretty glass or bowl, sprinkle with sugar, and pour the cream over the berries until they are barely covered. Garnish with a sprig of mint if you have it in your garden.

Fresh Orange Juice: Buy two or three large oranges. Cut in half and squeeze into a glass. Be sure to remove the seeds with a spoon. You can also use a juicer if you have one.

The Decorations

Buy a single rose or carnation and place in a pretty vase. Decorate Mom's breakfast tray or place setting with doilies, or pretty cloth napkins. Place your homemade card on the tray (see below).

Create your own homemade card for Mom by using colored paper, a white doily and markers. Glue a doily to one side of the colored paper. Fold the paper in half with the doily side out. You can cut a second doily into a heart shape and glue to the front of your card. This one can be lightly colored, so your message will show up. A crayon or chalk works well for this.

Use your marker to write your message or draw decorations on the card. You can also find a poem by visiting the local library. Ask the librarian to assist you in finding poetry that would be suitable for using on a Mother's Day or birthday card.

The finishing touch to a perfect breakfast is the clean up! Be sure to wash the dishes, wipe down the kitchen and put everything away just as you found it. Also, be sure to give Mom your biggest hug and tell her that you love her. This in itself will be one of the best gifts she will receive.

Growing and Using Garlic Chives
Garlic chives, Allium tuberosum, is a hardy perennial (Zones 3-9) that will grow to about 12 inches high. The stems are skinnier and flat, instead of hollow as are regular chives, with greenish white blooms that are about an inch wide and not as rounded. They bloom in the summer rather than spring. The bloom stalks grow much taller than the leaves, sometimes up to 30 inches.

The stems and blooms are both edible and have a mild garlic onion taste. I've noticed many writers will list this as primarily as an Asian herb, as they are also known as Chinese chives, Chinese leeks, ku chai (China) or Nira (Japan), but it has many other uses as well!

The Perfect Porch Swing
Perhaps it is the soothing rhythm or the reassuring creak of the porch swing that attracts us. Perhaps it is the companionable silence or quiet conversation. Or maybe swings simply remind us of more genteel times.

Although porch swings can be purchased in a wide range of materials, the most common are wicker and wood. You can also make your own porch swing from one of the myriad of woodworking patterns available at garden centers, hardware stores, or on the Internet.
